1000 USD to BTC - Exchange - How much Bitcoin (BTC) is ...

Putting $400M of Bitcoin on your company balance sheet

Also posted on my blog as usual. Read it there if you can, there are footnotes and inlined plots.
A couple of months ago, MicroStrategy (MSTR) had a spare $400M of cash which it decided to shift to Bitcoin (BTC).
Today we'll discuss in excrutiating detail why this is not a good idea.
When a company has a pile of spare money it doesn't know what to do with, it'll normally do buybacks or start paying dividends. That gives the money back to the shareholders, and from an economic perspective the money can get better invested in other more promising companies. If you have a huge pile of of cash, you probably should be doing other things than leave it in a bank account to gather dust.
However, this statement from MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor exists to make it clear he's buying into BTC for all the wrong reasons:
“This is not a speculation, nor is it a hedge. This was a deliberate corporate strategy to adopt a bitcoin standard.”
Let's unpack it and jump into the economics Bitcoin:

Is Bitcoin money?

No.
Or rather BTC doesn't act as money and there's no serious future path for BTC to become a form of money. Let's go back to basics. There are 3 main economic problems money solves:
1. Medium of Exchange. Before money we had to barter, which led to the double coincidence of wants problem. When everyone accepts the same money you can buy something from someone even if they don't like the stuff you own.
As a medium of exchange, BTC is not good. There are significant transaction fees and transaction waiting times built-in to BTC and these worsen the more popular BTC get.
You can test BTC's usefulness as a medium of exchange for yourself right now: try to order a pizza or to buy a random item with BTC. How many additional hurdles do you have to go through? How many fewer options do you have than if you used a regular currency? How much overhead (time, fees) is there?
2. Unit of Account. A unit of account is what you compare the value of objects against. We denominate BTC in terms of how many USD they're worth, so BTC is a unit of account presently. We can say it's because of lack of adoption, but really it's also because the market value of BTC is so volatile.
If I buy a $1000 table today or in 2017, it's roughly a $1000 table. We can't say that a 0.4BTC table was a 0.4BTC table in 2017. We'll expand on this in the next point:
3. Store of Value. When you create economic value, you don't want to be forced to use up the value you created right away.
For instance, if I fix your washing machine and you pay me in avocados, I'd be annoyed. I'd have to consume my payment before it becomes brown, squishy and disgusting. Avocado fruit is not good money because avocadoes loses value very fast.
On the other hand, well-run currencies like the USD, GBP, CAD, EUR, etc. all lose their value at a low and most importantly fairly predictible rate. Let's look at the chart of the USD against BTC
While the dollar loses value at a predictible rate, BTC is all over the place, which is bad.
One important use money is to write loan contracts. Loans are great. They let people spend now against their future potential earnings, so they can buy houses or start businesses without first saving up for a decade. Loans are good for the economy.
If you want to sign something that says "I owe you this much for that much time" then you need to be able to roughly predict the value of the debt in at the point in time where it's due.
Otherwise you'll have a hard time pricing the risk of the loan effectively. This means that you need to charge higher interests. The risk of making a loan in BTC needs to be priced into the interest of a BTC-denominated loan, which means much higher interest rates. High interests on loans are bad, because buying houses and starting businesses are good things.

BTC has a fixed supply, so these problems are built in

Some people think that going back to a standard where our money was denominated by a stock of gold (the Gold Standard) would solve economic problems. This is nonsense.
Having control over supply of your currency is a good thing, as long as it's well run.
See here
Remember that what is desirable is low variance in the value, not the value itself. When there are wild fluctuations in value, it's hard for money to do its job well.
Since the 1970s, the USD has been a fiat money with no intrinsic value. This means we control the supply of money.
Let's look at a classic poorly drawn econ101 graph
The market price for USD is where supply meets demand. The problem with a currency based on an item whose supply is fixed is that the price will necessarily fluctuate in response to changes in demand.
Imagine, if you will, that a pandemic strikes and that the demand for currency takes a sharp drop. The US imports less, people don't buy anything anymore, etc. If you can't print money, you get deflation, which is worsens everything. On the other hand, if you can make the money printers go brrrr you can stabilize the price
Having your currency be based on a fixed supply isn't just bad because in/deflation is hard to control.
It's also a national security risk...
The story of the guy who crashed gold prices in North Africa
In the 1200s, Mansa Munsa, the emperor of the Mali, was rich and a devout Muslim and wanted everyone to know it. So he embarked on a pilgrimage to make it rain all the way to Mecca.
He in fact made it rain so hard he increased the overall supply of gold and unintentionally crashed gold prices in Cairo by 20%, wreaking an economic havoc in North Africa that lasted a decade.
This story is fun, the larger point that having your inflation be at the mercy of foreign nations is an undesirable attribute in any currency. The US likes to call some countries currency manipulators, but this problem would be serious under a gold standard.

Currencies are based on trust

Since the USD is based on nothing except the US government's word, how can we trust USD not to be mismanaged?
The answer is that you can probably trust the fed until political stooges get put in place. Currently, the US's central bank managing the USD, the Federal Reserve (the Fed for friends & family), has administrative authority. The fed can say "no" to dumb requests from the president.
People who have no idea what the fed does like to chant "audit the fed", but the fed is already one of the best audited US federal entities. The transcripts of all their meetings are out in the open. As is their balance sheet, what they plan to do and why. If the US should audit anything it's the Department of Defense which operates without any accounting at all.
It's easy to see when a central bank will go rogue: it's when political yes-men are elected to the board.
For example, before printing themselves into hyperinflation, the Venezuelan president appointed a sociologist who publicly stated “Inflation does not exist in real life” and instead is a made up capitalist lie. Note what happened mere months after his gaining control over the Venezuelan currency
This is a key policy. One paper I really like, Sargent (1984) "The end of 4 big inflations" states:
The essential measures that ended hyperinflation in each of Germany,Austria, Hungary, and Poland were, first, the creation of an independentcentral bank that was legally committed to refuse the government'sdemand or additional unsecured credit and, second, a simultaneousalteration in the fiscal policy regime.
In english: *hyperinflation stops when the central bank can say "no" to the government."
The US Fed, like other well good central banks, is run by a bunch of nerds. When it prints money, even as aggressively as it has it does so for good reasons. You can see why they started printing on March 15th as the COVID lockdowns started:
The Federal Reserve is prepared to use its full range of tools to support the flow of credit to households and businesses and thereby promote its maximum employment and price stability goals.
In english: We're going to keep printing and lowering rates until jobs are back and inflation is under control. If we print until the sun is blotted out, we'll print in the shade.

BTC is not gold

Gold is a good asset for doomsday-preppers. If society crashes, gold will still have value.
How do we know that?
Gold has held value throughout multiple historic catastrophes over thousands of years. It had value before and after the Bronze Age Collapse, the Fall of the Western Roman Empire and Gengis Khan being Gengis Khan.
Even if you erased humanity and started over, the new humans would still find gold to be economically valuable. When Europeans d̶i̶s̶c̶o̶v̶e̶r̶e̶d̶ c̶o̶n̶q̶u̶e̶r̶e̶d̶ g̶e̶n̶o̶c̶i̶d̶e̶d̶ went to America, they found gold to be an important item over there too. This is about equivalent to finding humans on Alpha-Centauri and learning that they think gold is a good store of value as well.
Some people are puzzled at this: we don't even use gold for much! But it has great properties:
First, gold is hard to fake and impossible to manufacture. This makes it good to ascertain payment.
Second, gold doesnt react to oxygen, so it doesn't rust or tarnish. So it keeps value over time unlike most other materials.
Last, gold is pretty. This might sound frivolous, and you may not like it, but jewelry has actual value to humans.
It's no coincidence if you look at a list of the wealthiest families, a large number of them trade in luxury goods.
To paraphrase Veblen humans have a profound desire to signal social status, for the same reason peacocks have unwieldy tails. Gold is a great way to achieve that.
On the other hand, BTC lacks all these attributes. Its value is largely based on common perception of value. There are a few fundamental drivers of demand:
Apart from these, it's hard to argue that BTC will retain value throughout some sort of economic catastrophe.

BTC is really risky

One last statement from Michael Saylor I take offense to is this:
“We feel pretty confident that Bitcoin is less risky than holding cash, less risky than holding gold,” MicroStrategy CEO said in an interview
"BTC is less risky than holding cash or gold long term" is nonsense. We saw before that BTC is more volatile on face value, and that as long as the Fed isn't run by spider monkeys stacked in a trench coat, the inflation is likely to be within reasonable bounds.
But on top of this, BTC has Abrupt downside risks that normal currencies don't. Let's imagine a few:

Blockchain solutions are fundamentally inefficient

Blockchain was a genius idea. I still marvel at the initial white paper which is a great mix of economics and computer science.
That said, blockchain solutions make large tradeoffs in design because they assume almost no trust between parties. This leads to intentionally wasteful designs on a massive scale.
The main problem is that all transactions have to be validated by expensive computational operations and double checked by multiple parties. This means waste:
Many design problems can be mitigated by various improvements over BTC, but it remains that a simple database always works better than a blockchain if you can trust the parties to the transaction.

Best way to convert USD to CAD?

I have a ~1000 USD cheque that I want to convert to CAD.
The thing is the exchange rates at the bank are high. There is a company that offers a better rate than the bank since they specialize in exchanging currencies in bulk, but I'm wondering if anyone has an idea of a way to break even, or even to make money.
A couple of ideas I have in mind are 1) buying Bitcoin at a discounted rate on LocalBitcoins from people who want to sell theirs. I have an established profile already, so it's easy enough. 2) finding someone who wants USD and trading in person, but these days not many people are travelling, so that's unrealistic.
Any other ideas how to break even, or make money exchanging currency?

Payment options for Canadian performers and sellers

So this question comes up a lot and I thought it was worth making a separate post about it to try and get all the information in one place. While there are many great resources on the various camming and selling subreddits regarding payment options, none of them are specific to Canadian sellers as far as I know. Please make sure you familiarize yourself with those, though, because they have information about the safety of your money and your identity/privacy when using each service.
Transparency Statement
Apps and services I have personally used will be indicated within. I also want to note that I was given a $10 Polyalpha gift card by a fellow Redditor and seller for a chance to try the service (it was a public offer given in a comment thread). I do not anticipate bias because of this, but it has given me information about the service that I would not have otherwise had.
Disclaimer
This post is for information purposes only and nothing I say should be construed as an endorsement. Similarly, the focus of this post is on payment options for Canadian models. There are a lot more things to consider as you do your research, so please keep in mind that this is not intended to be a comprehensive resource and take the time to double-check how each works when it comes to personal safety and anonymity in particular.
I have broken this down into two tables – one for third-party apps that Canadians can use to receive direct payment from individual buyers, and one that gives the lowdown on getting paid from various content/cam sites. Note that many of the options in Table 2 are also payment processors or can be used as such.
Table 1. Third-party apps for receiving direct payment.

Opening a US Checking Account
To my knowledge, TD and RBC are the only banks where this is possible. In order to take advantage of the payment options I’ve identified in bold in Table 1 and Table 2, it is imperative that you open a US-based checking account and not just a USD account through your home branch. The difference is that a US-based checking account is tied to a branch that has a physical location in the US.
I opened mine through RBC and it was relatively painless. I opened a Canadian checking account online but had to go to a branch to provide ID verification. This is required in order to open the US account. Next I called them to open the US-based account. You can do this at any branch as well, but I was told that it takes longer to open this way. Over the phone, it was instant. My accounts are linked through my online banking portal and RBC banking app, allowing me to transfer myself money easily and instantly. They also sent me a Visa Debit for my US account, which took about two weeks to arrive.
Table 2. Payment methods for Canadian sellers and performers on various cam/content sites.
I have omitted all instances of wire transfers (because they are slow, expensive, and usually have high payout minimums) and all instances of cheques (because they are slow). I have omitted all mention of ePayments because they no longer accept payments in USD.

Beginners guide to Syscoin (SYS) and why you should be investing in this cryptocurrency in 2018

What is Syscoin?

Some have described Syscoin (SYS) as the Shopify, Amazon and Ebay of the blockchain world. Syscoin is a revolutionary cryptocurrency that offers near zero cost financial transactions, incredible speed and provides businesses the infrastructure to trade goods, assets, digital certificates and data securely. Syscoin isn’t just about money and trading, it has the ability to attract various business types thanks to its native set of features geared towards business on the blockchain. From eBay traders and High Street shops to Medical applications, Insurance and Gaming, Syscoin’s decentralized network benefits everyone!
Syscoin is developed by Blockchain Foundry (BF). BF provides blockchain technology based services, projects and products for a wide variety of use cases with the stated aim of disrupting markets by leveraging the potential of blockchain technology. Syscoin is mainly known to be the first cryptocurrency to offer a fully decentralized marketplace based on blockchain. What is lesser known is that this is only a part of what Syscoin offers.
With the introduction of Masternodes in February or March 2018 SYS will be transformed from just a ’marketplace coin’ to a completely ‘utilitarian coin’. The Masternode infrastructure allows the addition of decentralized databases and file storage, increased transaction speed to surpass POS/Visa/Mastercard capabilities, true Turing complete smart contract capabilities for unlimited business logic, sidechains, application layers and an identity layer. This will all be accessible through an API, rather than a new language, enabling nearly any developer to create any blockchain application they can conceive. This will usher in the next generation of blockchain applications - made for new or existing businesses - by conveniently offering everything available from the blockchain space today.

SYS Origin

The blockchain as conceptualized by Satoshi Nakamoto back in 2008 envisioned a peer-to-peer electronic cash network that would prevent double-spending. A year later, the blockchain became an integral part of bitcoin, serving as the latter's public ledger of transactions. Although Nakamoto's reference client mentioned a decentralized marketplace service, the subsequent implementation did not incorporate this due to a lack of resources.
Syscoin was initially described in a 2014 draft whitepaper that envisioned Decentralized Marketplace Creation, Decentralized Smart Contracts and Documents, Decentralized Certificate Issuance and Transfer, and Decentralized Data Storage and Retrieval, as among the services that it would offer upon its release.
Syscoin aimed to bring Nakamoto's vision of a decentralized marketplace back into the blockchain, among the other commercial-grade services it aims to deliver to clients. Other services that Syscoin plans to provide include secure data storage and transfer, and unique user aliases that link their owners to the services controlled by the alias.
The early Syscoin wallet was superseded by the release of Blockmarket Desktop 1.0 on September 12, 2017, marking the culmination of Syscoin's vision of a fully decentralized marketplace with a desktop GUI based on the blockchain.
The planned release of Blockmarket Web, a fully web-based version, and Blockmarket Professional in 2018 takes that vision one step further, as more advanced seller stores become a reality.

The Team

The Team that NEVER quits! Before the launch of Syscoin (Q3 2014), there was a presale ICO by Moolah (as a partner), which turned out to be detrimental for Syscoin. The project raised around 1,000BTC for development but the Syscoin Team only managed to access 250BTC which were used for price support. Moolah (Ryan Kennedy) absconded with the bulk of the ICO funds and the Syscoin team were left with ~30million Syscoin at a price around 400 satoshi. Even after this tragic event, the devs didn’t quit and continued to work on the project without stopping. The case against Moolah is still on-going. See the article from CoinDesk here: http://www.coindesk.com/uk-court-syscoin-injunction-moolah-750-btc/.
What is this detail telling us about the dev team? While some crypto projects are just scams and bring little to no innovation, they’ve proven that they are in it for the long term - ably demonstrated by the fact that they continued to work despite their funds being stolen. And now that hard work is beginning to pay off with the entire team going full-time for the first time in January 2018 and new developers being hired following VC funding for BF.

What is Blockmarket Desktop?

Building on the World's First Decentralized Marketplace, Blockmarket is the newest generation of Syscoin's Desktop wallet with a complete, state-of-the-art marketplace built-in where you can securely and reliably buy and sell any items you wish. Entire stores can be created directly through the marketplace where you can sell your own products or re-sell others’ products for commission. Use of blockchain technology eliminates middlemen, credit card fees, maintenance fees, downtime and political interference. Persons are literally able to buy or sell anything to anyone, anytime, anywhere on Earth! Blockmarket Desktop was launched on September 12, 2017.

Key Blockmarket Features

• Price Pegging to currencies such as USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, CNY and BTC
• Bitcoin and Zcash as payment options
• Arbitrated Escrow
• Encrypted Messaging
• KYC/AML Compliance
• Images
• Unlimited Inventory Items

Name Aliases

Wallet addresses for cryptocurrencies generally consist of a unique string of between 27-34 alphanumeric characters. Such an address isn’t easy to memorize. Although the addresses can be added to an address book within the wallet, Syscoin has taken the user's convenience one step further, allowing you to create a unique Alias for your wallet address, such as a name, title, or characters specific to a username. These can be used to send SYS from home, to a mobile wallet, to work, to friends, to common suppliers or to repeat customers easily, without requiring any memorizing, writing it down, copy & pasting or emailing yourself the address.

Digital Certificates

Using the cryptography of the blockchain persons can issue, authorize, and exchange digital certificates of any kind. With Syscoin anyone can issue provably-unique certificates with text or ASCII content to one or multiple parties on the Syscoin blockchain. These certificates can be authenticated by anyone via Syscoin’s cryptographic proof of work. This allows for the creation and free exchange of any kind of digital asset such as ownership certificates, warranties, receipts, tickets, certifications, diplomas, software licenses and more.

Integrated Exchanges

Integrated Crypto exchanges - Flypme and Changelly will facilitate exchanging 30+ cryptos for SYS, directly within the Blockmarket wallet.

Security Audit Verified

Blockmarket was successfully and independently security audited by Digital Boundary Group and was deemed low risk. Audit Results: [https://medium.com/@BlockchainFoundry/blockmarket-security-audit-results-and-next-steps-f69f94f149bf]

Blockmarket Web – (The Key to Mass Adoption)

BM web will bring SYS’s existing decentralized marketplace and all its features into a web-based version, enabling ease of use with a simple email and password login (grandma friendly) without any need for downloading a wallet or waiting for sync. Blockmarket web will be launched in February 2018.

Key Syscoin Developments

Masternodes

Ability for world-class transactions-per-second performance to scale-out with added nodes (theoretically 100k TPS per 1000 Masternodes, 300k TPS/3k masternodes, etc). In later releases, masternodes will also process smart contracts and facilitate sharded+encrypted offchain file-storage (with onchain anchors), among other touted functionality. They should also result in steadying the price movements - less volatility as holding will be incentivized

Smart Contracts

Scalable Ethereum Virtual Machine: Allows Turing complete smart contracts to be executed following the ethereum protocol at a much faster speed and at a fraction of the ethereum gas price.

Assets & Token Issuance

With its token issuance service, Syscoin allows anyone to create a custom asset token which can then be sent directly to anyone else on the network. This facilitates a variety of use cases including ICO token issuance, supply chain management, reward points, and loyalty programs.

Anonymous Transactions

Anonymous transactions: via mixing/shuffling at user-specified denomination. Afterwards, additional tech will be added in the near future which will further compound the degree of anonymity provided -Add ValueShuffle running on top of the masternode layer and you have the world's most advanced privacy tech in any coin. This brings true money fungibility to Syscoin and the missing link for true economic sovereignty. https://twitter.com/realSidhuJag/status/948588279540035584

Instant Send

Transactions can be sent and received instantly. This represents a similar sending capability as Dash, but is a step beyond- A type of backend node locking will allow an instantly received sum to be sent immediately, without delay, and without network risk of double-spend.

Buying Ether in Canada, my experience with different exchanges

Hello, I'm writing about my experiences buying ethereum in Canada, essentially converting CAD to ETH. The goal is to help beginners that are interested in getting started but don't know where to actually buy ether. There's a lot of info out there but most of it seems to be centered around USD, which doesn't always translate for CAD and our banking system. I'm by no means an expert but I figured someone might find this information helpful.
I've verified and used the following sites, so I'll be writing about them:
If you just want the gist of it, a super-quick summary of what I found:
With every one of these sites, there's usually some form of verification. This involves taking a picture of some piece of government ID (usually passport or drivers license), as well as some sort of proof of address such as a utlity bill. Some sites require you to take a selfie with some of that documentation or holding a handwritten sign. It seemed sketchy to me at first, but every place does it.
Coinbase
This was the first place I tried. Their only payment methods I could find are Visa and MasterCard, of which they charge a 3.75% convenience. With reward cards you might get 1%-2% back, but this is a fairly high fee. The bright side is it's just about instantaneous.
One thing I noticed is that their sell price is about ~$5 higher than a few exchanges. For example, as I write this, it's $119.23 on coinbase. On kraken it's 113.99 for a market order.
There is a weekly $200 limit on the amount to buy. A 30 day countdown started after I spent $500 to increase the limit. I can't find what the new limit amount will be once that countdown reaches 0 though.
So far, I've been with them for over a month and I've bought $600 worth of ether. The first time I bought it only took a minute to get sent to my private address. The second time it took ~40 minutes for it to actually get sent to my private ether address, but this was due to some issues they were having, probably just a fluke. I've bought two more times since then and both times it was instant.
To summarize
Pros:
Cons:
QuadrigaCX
Hoping to get lower fees, this was the second place I tried. They accept a lot more payments with a variety of fees, I'll list them out:
Funding Type Daily Limits Time Frame Fee Verification
Electronic Funds Transfer Min $250, Max $10,000 5 Business Days 5% required
Interac e-Transfer Min $500, Max $5,000 Next Business Day 2% + $5 required
Interac Online Min $50, Max $2,000 Instant (but may be held 24 hours by security) 1.5% (min. $5) required
Bank Wire Min $100,000, Max $500,000 2-4 Business Days Free required
Crypto Capital Min $500, Max $500,000 24 hours Free required
Electronic Funds Transfer replaced their "direct bank transfer" option, and while I think it's great since I think every bank supports it, it unfortunately has a rather high fee at 5%. I don't really see why you would use this though, if you can use Interac Online, it's faster. If you need the higher daily limit, a bank wire would be cheaper too.
Interac e-Transfer I'd go with this if your bank doesn't support Interac Online and if you don't mind the 2% fee. If you're doing a large amount, the Bank Wire would be a better choice, depending on how much your bank charges you.
Interac Online seems like the best choice for less than $2000. Unfortunately even though my bank card says "Interac" on it, and the bank is listed as supported, I can't use it for Interac Online because the card is both a debit and visa card. I've read that RBC and BMO are the only banks that support this, so it may be worth signing up with them.
Bank Wire ended up being what I used (EDIT: back then the minimum for a wire transfer was $500). I wanted to deposit a larger sum, so just paying my bank for the cost of the transfer ended up being worthwhile (about 0.5% fee). The downside is I had to go in person to a branch to send a wire transfer and it's only really worthwhile for larger transfers.
Crypto Capital seems like a 3rd party that you can wire to and then transfer that to QuadrigaCX. I don't see the appeal in using this to fund an account since you can just wire to QuadrigaCX directly.
I sent the wire transfer a few days ago, and it seems like it will take 3-5 business days for it to complete. I'll update this post if the money somehow just disappears. Wire transfer came through today, no problems :)
Once you do get CAD on QuadrigaCX, the fees to buy Ether are 0.5%. Combined with my wire transfer cost, I expect to only have paid a total of 1% in fees.
To summarize
Pros:
Cons:
Kraken
The latest site I've tried, they have multiple tiers of verification. You can't deposit CAD until you reach tier 3 verification, which can take up to 48 hours.
Tier 1 and tier 2 were verified within the hour but tier 3 was still not verified 3 days later. When I submitted a support ticket, they were very quick to respond the next day and told me I needed to submit a Confirmation ID. Their site listed the Confirmation ID for a few countries and some criteria but it didn't seem like Canada applied to any of the criteria. Regardless, I submitted the Confirmation ID and was verified with tier 3 that same day.
The only way to deposit CAD with Kraken is through wire transfer and it seems like there's some unlisted fees based on what their banks charge them to receive a wire transfer (as well as any intermediary bank). I have not done this so I cannot tell what the costs would be.
Once you do have CAD on their exchange, their fees are better than QuadrigaCX with a MakeTaker rate at 0.16%/0.26%.
I have sent ether to Kraken just for playing around with trading and I've had no problems.
To summarize
Pros:
Cons:
Coinsquare
Verified today and decided to try the Interac e-transfer. This is when I encountered a problem (at least on firefox), for funding the account, they have a javascript button to dismiss an overlay before you can do the e-transfer. The html element for the button is an href and has a 'blank="target"' property on it. When I press this button, it opens a blank new tab, and nothing changes on the page. Running the javascript function manually causes the alert to be removed and it works as expected. This is a little insane that I had to have knowledge of html to get access to it. Their site has been improved a significant amount and I haven't ran into these kinds of problems since.
Anyway the e-transfer itself worked perfectly, it funded my account, and I think it's my favourite way to transfer CAD into exchanges so far. Only a 2.5% fee and only takes a few minutes to be in my account. They also have wire transfer, money order, and bank order, but I think other exchanges have a much better interface.
Buying Ethereum was a bit more confusing since (as far as I can tell) you can't trade CAD to ETH directly, you have to trade CAD for BTC first, and then trade that BTC for ETH.
The interface for placing an order was confusing to me compared to Kraken or QuadrigaCX, but I figured it out. Although I was interested in seeing how many orders there were and for how much, but I wasn't able to find that.
Buying BTC has a trade fee of 0.1%, and then trading for ETH has a trade fee of 0.2%. Overall total fees for e-transfer were ~1.3%~ 2.8% now, which is great considering what other fees are and how fast it is in comparison. If you can get past the interface, e-transfer is the way to go.
Funding Type Daily Limits Time Frame Fee Verification
Interac Online Min $100, Max $2,000 Instant (withheld for 3 days) 2.5% not required
Intac e-Transfer Min $100, Max $3,000 1-3 days (withheld 0-7 days) 5% required
Flexepin Min $20, Max $500 instant 2.5% required
Bank draft Min $1000, Max $9,000 0-2 days (withheld 0-5 days) 0.25% required
Money Order Min $100, Max $1,000 0-2 days (withheld 0-5 days) 0.25% required
Wire transfer Min $10,000, Max $300,000 0-1 day (withheld 0-2 days) 0.5% required
They have this concept of withholding funds, where you basically have to keep the money on the account. You can trade with it as much as you want, but you won't be able to withdraw until after the withholding time.
Pros:
Cons:
Alternatives
There are of course other sites to get ether, and there's always the option of getting bitcoin and exchanging it through an exchange like Kraken or Poloniex for ether. There are bitcoin ATMs scattered around as well, but I can't comment on any fees involved or how close they match exchange prices.
Other sites I checked out:
Alt Coins
The main sites for getting CAD into the cryptocurrency space like QuadrigaCX, Coinbase, Kraken, and Coinsquare don't have a lot of altcoins. Fortunately once you have ether you can send it to another exchange and trade that for altcoins. These are my favourite ones:
Funnily enough, this whole experience has made me appreciate the flexibility cryptocurrency like ether has and served as a reminder to how slow and cumbersome transactions become once the banking system is involved.
EDIT: received wire transfer through QuadrigaCX, made account with coinsquare.
EDIT2: added coinsquare section
EDIT3: updated QuadrigaCX and coinsquare section, updated alternatives list
EDIT4: Added e-transfer for QuadrigaCX!
EDIT5: Cleaned up alt coins section.

Even when I win, I lose.

I made a post months ago about how I gambled for a living and busted bankrolls of 200k+ many times and that I was quitting. You can find it here: https://www.reddit.com/problemgambling/comments/7q1kia/it_was_all_good_just_a_week_ago/?st=JJ0VY3LU&sh=fb829fa8
I get a lot of private messages asking how I’m doing and I have never responded to any, for one reason: I’ve been doing well but mainly because of gambling.
After I blew my last 200-250k, I began playing small poker again and running up my bank roll again, I found a new Chinese poker site that was soft (a lot of bad players)... I immediately started winning some good money, then I began stalking friends on the site (I put up the money and they play and I get a % if their wins and take all the losses). This was worth it because the site was that easy.
I started playing multiple tables of 5/10 USD PLO (2000 max buyin) and my horses (people I stakes were playing 1/2 to 3/6. It started snow balling super fast and before you know it I hit a $248k CAD bankroll,
I also recently met a new girl and I really like her. I’d say I’m pulling in about $5000 a week playing but for the last ten days I’ve feel into a deep pit of depression. I started sports betting for the first time in a while and started off hot winning ~$30k in MLB betting but have since tailspun out of control and lost about $100k in 4 days.
My current bankroll sits at $150k. I know it sounds great right? Compared to where I was during my last post I would’ve done anything to be here. This is my point though, you are never happy with where you’re at. I know I have a lot of money I guess, but I also know these urges are uncontrollable. If I could bet somewhere that I would be in debt by the end of July, I would easily bet it at -200 (laying 2 to 1). It’s a certainty, I will be broke. I will continue this spiral, I will lose this new girl, and I will completely stress the fuck out of everyone around me.
I’m getting so tired of this routine. It really hurts, but I can’t stop. Everyday I wake up and place bets. I get paid in bitcoin on the poker site and just keep making accounts on nitrogensports and keep losing it. I self banned my self everywhere but there’s no way for me to ban myself here because I can keep making new accounts.
Just know that, even when you win, you’ll find a way to lose. And I am definitely finding a way to lose. Self-destruction is my strength, and oh boy am I great at it.
I’ll post again when I’m suicidal and bankrupt.
Forgot to add: my best friend is also telling me he wants to kill himself as I’m writing this. And it’s because of gambling.
I know 3-5 people around me who are in six figure debts with bookies or are about to lose their homes, and they’re all smart people. Quit before your threshold becomes so high that $1000 bets don’t do it for you. When you need $10,000 on a game just to feel it, the consequences get way worse. Also... never bet with a bookie. I was always told that, and always thought “I’ll only gamble what I can afford to pay”, that never happens.

Useful Beginner's Guide to Syscoin

In simple terms think Dash + Ethereum/Lisk + Monero + Nano + Storj + Particl capabilities all in one coin!

Download Blockmarket Desktop 1.2

Key Blockmarket Features

- Decentralized Marketplace

The marketplace platform provides a decentralized and high redundant channel for selling goods and services. Features include: • Price Pegging to currencies such as USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, CNY and BTC • Bitcoin and Zcash as payment options • Arbitrated Escrow • Encrypted Messaging • KYC/AML Compliance • Images • Unlimited Inventory Items

- Name Aliases

- Digital Certificates

Using the cryptography of the blockchain persons can issue, authorize, and exchange digital certificates of any kind. With Syscoin anyone can issue provably-unique certificates with text or ASCII content to one or multiple parties on the Syscoin blockchain. These certificates can be authenticated by anyone via Syscoin’s cryptographic proof of work. This allows for the creation and free exchange of any kind of digital asset such as ownership certificates, warranties, receipts, tickets, certifications, diplomas, software licenses and more.

- Integrated Exchanges

Integrated Crypto exchanges - Flypme and Changelly will facilitate exchanging 30+ cryptos for SYS, directly within the Blockmarket wallet.

- Security Audit Verified

Blockmarket was successfully and independently security audited by Digital Boundary Group and was deemed low risk. View Audit Results.

Blockmarket Web – (The Key to Mass Adoption)

BM web will bring SYS’s existing decentralized marketplace and all its features into a web-based version, enabling ease of use with a simple email and password login (grandma friendly) without any need for downloading a wallet or waiting for sync. Blockmarket web will be launched in Q1 2018.   This launch will be accompanied by a marketing campaign roll-out that seeks to build brand recognition with audiences within the existing crypto ecosystem and more significantly with the broader, global, non-crypto audience. For this reason Ballistic Arts, a full-service marketing agency was retained by BF. BF Engages Marketing Agency

Primary Target Market + Value Potential

The primary target market for BF’s Syscoin/Blockmarket web flagship is the retail e-commerce industry. This sets up their decentralized marketplace to rival such commercial giants as Amazon ($648B market cap), Alibaba ($453B market cap) and eBay ($43B market cap). According to eMarketer’s Worldwide Retail and Ecommerce Sales report, global retail e-commerce sales for 2017 were $2.3 Trillion. This is expected to reach an estimated $4 Trillion by 2020 reflecting the rapid growth within this sector.   To perform a very simple assessment of the Syscoin/Blockmarket web’s potential let’s assume that a 1% portion of the forecasted $4 trillion market is captured, which represents $40 billion in revenue. Assuming a sales to market cap ratio of 1:1 for simplicity, the circulating supply of 531 million SYS, with a $40 billion market cap yields a price of roughly $75 per coin. However, with masternodes that limit the circulating supply and token utility that extends beyond retail e-commerce, the SYS price could likely reach much higher. Please note that these are just very simple assumptions and projections for this exercise, however the real world driven potential that this project has is clearly evident.

Key Syscoin Developments

- Z-DAG: Zero Confirmation Transactions with Double Spend Protection (WORLD’S FIRST)

View Developer’s Twitter post View Syscoin’s Twitter post

- Masternodes

Ability for world-class transactions-per-second performance to scale-out with added nodes (theoretically 100k TPS per 1000 Masternodes, 300k TPS/3k masternodes, etc). In later releases, masternodes will also process smart contracts and facilitate sharded+encrypted offchain file-storage (with onchain anchors), among other touted functionality. They should also result in steadying the price movements - less volatility as holding will be incentivized.

- Masternode Rewards + Min. Hardware Specs

Masternode Rewards + Min. Hardware Specs Masternode ROI Calculator

- Smart Contracts

Scalable Ethereum Virtual Machine: Allows Turin complete smart contracts to be executed following the ethereum protocol at a much faster speed and at a fraction of the ethereum gas price.

- Assets & Token Issuance

With its token issuance service, Syscoin allows anyone to create a custom asset token which can then be sent directly to anyone else on the network. This facilitates a variety of use cases including ICO token issuance, supply chain management, reward points, and loyalty programs.

- Anonymous Transactions

Anonymous transactions: via mixing/shuffling at user-specified denomination. Afterwards, additional tech will be added in the near future which will further compound the degree of anonymity provided -Add ValueShuffle running on top of the masternode layer and you have the world's most advanced privacy tech in any coin. This brings true money fungibility to Syscoin and the missing link for true economic sovereignty. View Developer’s Twitter post.

- Instant Send

Transactions can be sent and received instantly. This represents a similar sending capability as Dash, but is a step beyond- A type of backend node locking will allow an instantly received sum to be sent immediately, without delay, and without network risk of double-spend.

Obtaining XMR is time-consuming and DIFFICULT.

Let me regress: To purchase XMR without incurring a ridiculous fee, jumping through hoops and or paying above market prices seems to be extremely difficult.
Let's see my options.

1: Purchase XMR from a broker like Coinbase:

2: Purchase BTC, then use Shapeshift or Poloniex to convert to XMR:

3: Purchase XMR from LocalMonero:

There's just lots of hoop jumping: converting between currencies, registering to websites, making passport photos. It is a very big time-sink. Monero is an amazing technology, but if the goal is mainstream adoption then everything above must be abolished somehow someway.

Free Public Offering of Counos Coin and Its Effect on the Future

Free Public Offering of Counos Coin and Its Effect on the Future of Cryptocurrencies
The market of cryptocurrencies has revived in recent years, and the growth of all outstanding cryptocurrencies have experienced a positive process. The news of free public offering of Counos Coin can have an acceptable effect on the positive economic role of cryptocurrencies. Counos platform intends to raise the demand for the market of cryptocurrencies via public and free offering of Counos Coin to the users. This decision can change Counos Coin into a decentralized coin.
Bitcoin’s Experience and the Chance of Its Repetition
Bitcoin entered the field of financial technology in 2009. Although Bitcoin is currently considered the most valuable cryptocurrency in the market, it didn’t have any dramatic financial value in the very beginning of its advent. In April 2011, Bitcoin had a value equal to one dollar, and on June 21, 2019, this cryptocurrency experiences a value of $10700. Only in 8 years, the value of Bitcoin has grown more than ten thousand times. Almost everyone who knows a little about the market of cryptocurrencies has wished he would have saved some amount of its capital on Bitcoin. This capital has had an unprecedented growth in a short run.
The fast growth of the Bitcoin price has many reasons. The limitation in the number of Bitcoins (total number of to-be-mined coins will ultimately approach a figure about 21 million), the increase of welcoming cyberspace users to trade with Bitcoin and also a wide database of investment, all ended in exorbitant growth of Bitcoin. Although the primary objective of generating Bitcoin was to combat the financial monopoly in the context of online financial trades, by including great investors in this market, a large volume of trades is merely limited to a specific minority group in Bitcoin network in time. It is estimated that more than 40% of the volume of Bitcoin capital is in 1000 digital wallets. This issue has caused a change in the decentralized financial structure of Bitcoin.
Counos Platform intends to minimize similar problems in addition to achieving positive features through offering a strategy based on the experience of successful cryptocurrencies. According to the official notice by Counos platform, Counos coin will be distributed publicly among all users who register in this platform and install its wallet. Counos Coin has a similar structure to Bitcoin, and only 21 million of this coin will be mined. The limited number of mined coins can cause anti-inflation structure and balanced growth of its price in the future. More than 16,800,000 Counos Coins have been mined, and Counos platform wants to distribute 15 million of these coins among all users who register in this platform freely. This public and free offering of this cryptocurrency which experiences an appropriate trade in exchanges such as southxchangee can strengthen its decentralized application. All of these issues can have interesting results and probability of repeating this Bitcoin capital increase might not be far-fetched for Counos Coin too.
Public Offering and Its Benefits
The public offering of a cryptocurrency can result in dramatic advantages. This issue can guarantee and stabilize the decentralized structure of Counos Coin more than any other. As it was pointed out before, the primary purpose of Bitcoin was to create a decentralized financial structure, but with including huge investments, a large volume of Bitcoin capital is kept by a limited number of investors. The public offering of Counos Coin can avoid the repetition of aggregating investment. On the other hand, through removing the ownership of Counos Coin and its public offering, the Counos founder can raise its stable price growth. Moreover, this public offering of cryptocurrency can significantly increase active users in the financial platform; this increase will bring about positive evolutions in the market of cryptocurrencies in addition to its direct effect on value increase of Counos Coin.
A Lottery Every Six Months
Counos Coin has promised to hold a ten-thousand-dollar lottery every six months. Those who have at least one Counos Coin in their wallet will take part in this lottery. The strategy of frequent lottery can cause the increase in trades in Counos platform.
Counos
Counos platform has taken other steps in financial markets based on Blockchain before the public offering of Counos Coin. Generating stablecoins based on credible global currencies and stablecoins based on precious metals are among measures taken by Counos financial platform. Counos Cash stablecoins (based on Swiss franc), Counos E (based on Euro), Counos U (based on USD) and Counos CAD (based on Canadian dollar) are cryptocurrencies with the stable price which facilitate international financial trades. These stablecoins always have a fixed value equal to the fiat currency of the countries.
On the other hand, Counos Gold and Counos Silver, are cryptocurrencies based on gold and silver, which can be applied as a source of investment in addition to facilitating global financial trades.Counos platform has started establishing financial services according to Blockchain technology too. Counos decentralized and centralized currency exchange services will be launched in the coming week. Counos decentralized exchange system lets the users address buying and selling cryptocurrencies needless to any middleman.
Counos Escrow service can also be used as a financial service to increase the confidence level of financial contracts, buying and selling goods and services via Blockchain technology. The free public offering of Counos Coin and giving various services can be effective in the future development of the market of cryptocurrencies and Blockchain technology.

Binance --> TrueUSD --> TDCanadaTrust in 3 days

Cross post from TrustToken.
QuadrigaCX was one of two successful methods for me to withdraw CAD. Coinsquare works very well and quickly for me without any troubles. There is a fairly wide spread, low liquidity and withdrawal fees, but I'm happy to pay their fees as I believe they have earned them. They also appear to have their own market making bots, but I can see them, and I'm fine with that as well. Kraken never approved my request for a higher tier that would allow fiat withdrawal. I can still deposit, trade and withdraw there without difficulty. I was not successful in sending the required wire transfer to Gemini in order to withdraw USD. A trouble ticket to them returned an unhelpful reply that their web wire transfer instructions were correct. The teller and manager at my branch couldn't decipher Gemini's wire instructions into their TDCanadaTrust computer terminal.
After losing $ on 6 centralized exchanges (maybe 7 if Cryptopia doesn't come back), a popular decentralized exchange where customers retain control over their private keys is desperately needed. Binance is currently in testnet for their eagerly awaited decentralized exchange. One of Binance's supported cryptocurrencies is the stablecoin TrueUSD (TUSD), not to be confused with Tether (USDT). I don't trust Tether.
I signed up for TrustToken on Wednesday with account approval in under 5 hours. They are found at https://www.trusttoken.com/trueusd/ (never click some's provided hyperlink for financial activities!). There is a minimum redemption of 1000 USD in order to perform a TrueUSD wire transfer. Thursday, I purchased TrueUSD on Binance against Bitcoin. I'm a DASH guy and had to convert to BTC first. The TrueUSD took 5 minutes to leave Binance into my Ledger Nano S.
One point of confusion for me was older internet news posts that state the TrueUSD need to be sent to the "smart contract" and the web page states: "...send the smart contract your TrueUSD tokens from a registered Ethereum address." Well, there are 3 potential addresses: the old one that internet posts from 2018 list, the newer replacement address (that is helpfully referred to as a replacement by the Ethereum block explorer) and the unique redemption address that is presented after entering wire transfer details while signed in to the web page. While crypto veterans may have no trouble recognizing that the unique redemption address is the one to use, newbies might send to one or the other of the two wrong potential addresses.
When the TrueUSD was sent for redemption using my Ledger Nano S and MyEtherWallet (MEW), with a manual entry of 150 000 into the gas limit, it confirmed in about 30 seconds on the Ethereum block explorer. Initially, my Ledger Nano S was not recognized by MEW. That meant I needed to update the Ledger Nano S firmware. By the time I clicked over to my email, there was already an email from TrustToken acknowledging the redemption request. Less than an hour and a half later, there was another email reporting that my wire was sent.
This morning, Friday, my TDCanadaTrust bank account shows receipt of the USD wire into my USD daily interest account, minus a 17.50 USD fee from TDCanadaTrust. I'm not sure what would happen if I had transferred into a Canadian dollar account, but I presume it would have been converted into CAD by TDCanadaTrust. Opening a USD account just for crypto may be a good idea.
A big thanks to the whole team at TrustToken. I'm very impressed at how fast and smooth it was. We Canadians now have another viable method of converting crypto to fiat and fiat to crypto.

Estimating the marginal cost of a transaction on the Bitcoin (Cash) network

Recently, the mempool has not been clearing with every block found. Should we immediately raise the block-size? Perhaps put plans to make the easy relay of sub satoshi/byte transaction on hold?
Assumptions:
Step 1: find the price of storing a transaction
Searching NCIX:
Calculate the price per TB, assuming 1 is 6 drives are used for parity (30 bays usable storage)
Estimate the UTXO premium:
As you can see. miners have a strong incentive to offer free UTXO consolidation transactions: and require bulk UTXO fanning transaction to pay a fee of 494.86sat/kB -- about 0.5 sat/byte. ((0.01249USD/kB)/(2523.96USD/BCH)*100,000,000sat/BCH)
Fees are no where near that high due to the block subsidy. For an 8MB block: 1,250,000,000 satoshies/ 8000 kB -> 156,250sat/kB; or more conventionally: 157satosies/byte.. Note that the block subsidy per kB goes down with larger block-sizes.
Step 2: Estimate Bandwidth costs
Disclaimer: I am not too familiar with commercial bandwidth plans
Exercise to the reader:
Re-do these calculations for hobbyist hardware and internet connections. You probably have to assume a smaller block size: such as 100MB.
Disclaimer: I later learned the site I was using for prices (NCIX) was bankrupt. Not sure how much that would skew prices.

After seeing dogecoin's nascar, would the folks from r/bitcoin be interested in sponsoring a professional athlete?

My friend is a professional surfer who recently lost his sponsorship from billabong after around 10 years riding for them. He just bought a house a couple of years ago and very recently and and his girlfriend have just had a kid and I imagine he's feeling pretty uncertain about what the future holds for him at the moment.
I haven't spoken to him yet but I was wondering what people thought about perhaps getting him an address and some sponsorship from our community so that he could continue his career and simultaneously promote bitcoin to a crowd that I think could have a lot to benefit from adopting bitcoin.
I've been travelling for the last 9 months and bitcoin was extremely useful for me on several occasions.
  1. I wanted to purchase a car but my ATM withdrawal limits meant that I could only withdraw $1000 a day. I was under a bit of a time imperative and only had a couple of days to find and buy a car before beginning a road trip and I wouldn't have been able to get enough local currency out to pay for it. Enter bitcoin.... I signed up to localbitcoins.com, found a buyer in minutes and voila, I had $3000 local CAD by the end of the first day.
  2. I left some of my surfboard and gear with a friend I was travelling with as I was planning on meeting back up with them however, plans changed and I didn't end up getting back to meet them. I had him FedEx my gear from Mexico up to the States but I didn't have any AUD to transfer to him to pay him back, nor did I have the means to get him Pesos or USD. Enter bitcoin and within a couple of seconds I have reimbursed him for the favour.
  3. I was owed some money in CAD from a friend, however if they paid me back into my Canadian bank account I would have had to pay some silly amount to have a couple of hundred bucks wire transferred to my Aussie bank. Enter bitcoin, and I simply had them purchase some coin on localbitcoin in Canada, send them to me where upon receiving them I could change them over for AUD locally.
I appreciate the fact that I probably lost a bit of money along the way with less that ideal exchange rates on localbitcoins however, for the sheer convenience of avoiding WU and the Currency Exchanges and being able to avoid banks, I'd happily do it again.
International surf travellers and the international travel community in general could benefit a lot from adopting bitcoin. It could eliminate the need for travellers cheques, or prepaid visa travel cards, or simply carrying around big chunks of cash. As the exchange rate stabilises and more bitcoin ATM's pop up in capital cities, airports, etc. the accessibility and practicality of using it as your main store of wealth will increase.
I imagine the publicity would be a positive as many people see the ฿ across the nose of his board and start asking questions. He's one of the best big wave surfers around at the moment and gets a lot of photos in magazines and is often granted wildcards into events such as Pipemasters and Teahupoo.
Anyway, it's just a thought, but I'd be curious to hear some feedback on it.

I never hated banks until I started using bitcoin

I apologize for the long wall of text.
So I've been waiting on a wire transfer for 2 weeks and last Thursday, I get a text from my mom saying the bank tried to contact me and they will try to call me. I'm in class until 5:30, so when I got out, of course, the bank is closed. Fine I'll wait until tomorrow.
I call the next morning (Friday), the lady who tried to call me about my account wasn't in, so great I have to wait until Monday to see if she will be there, because no one else can help me. I call Monday, I get the answering machine, 3 times throughout the day. Was it a holiday? What is going on? I call Today (Tuesday) and after 5 days I finally find out what is going on with my money.
Turns out the bank transfer has some bank number that didn't match or something so the money is sitting in the bank in Tokyo, waiting for a response from my bank, about what the corrected numbers are, or if they should just wire it back.
Bonus, I had my bank wire USD (I live in Canada), so the bank used my CAD to purchase USD (from themselves, I guess) and sent that, but now my options are to give them the exact information I gave them in the first place, to try to find the mistake and correct it, or have the money wired back, so I can just buy localbitcoins. Of course, if they receive the wire transfer back, they have to use my now USD to purchase CAD (from themselves again! yay!) which of course has a shittier-than-shitty exchange rate. So I will lose ~$1000 in fees and conversion rates (A significant portion of my funds).
So I told them, if they can't fix the wire information, just ask the money be transferred back to my account. I then email her the wire transfer information and add a note to confirm with me before making any decision (she did say she would call me before she left for the day). 2pm rolls around, I try to call before I head to class, I get the answering machine. What the [email protected]#k? I try calling again around 3:30, same thing. I've heard nothing back from the lady who said she would make sure to call me before she left. Not even a response to my wire transfer email which I sent not 2 minutes after ending the first call with her.
So I get to watch as the price rises by ~20% while I should have had my bitcoin last week.
Holy shit
